in a soup pot cook onion, butter, garlic, celery and sausage until onion is tender for about 5 minutes.
then add potatoes, carrot, cabbage, broth, water, bay leaf and seasonings.
let uncovered 15 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
add tomatoes with juices and cornstarch and simmer 10 minutes more.
add bay leaf and season with salt and pepper to taste, serve with sour cream if desired.
